Chip Henry ~ April 26, 1958 - May 23, 2011

To our group: I believe all of you know that we lost Chip to a bicycle accident on May 23. I haven't sent out anything before this just because, well....just because. Anyway, I want you all to know how important all of you were to him, and me, and that our PC family is held close in my heart. Thank you to everyone that has contacted me with condolences. Much much love, Linda Mathabo Mabina Henry

The Honorable Charles “Chip” Henry,
Geauga County Juvenile/Probate Judge

Born April 26, 1958, Charles “Chip” Henry, 53, was the son of Jeanne F. and the late Charles Eugene “Gene” Henry. Chip and Linda are the parents of two children, Charles Adam, of Denver, Colo., and Kimberly, of Columbus. He is survived by his siblings, Dorothy Henry (Peter) Lee of Geneva, James F. (Grace) of Bainbridge Twp., Polly Henry (John) Whiting of Naples, Fla., Patrick O. (Lori) of Anchorage, Alaska, Daniel Hawley (Cynthia) of Anchorage, Alaska, and was a “Big Brother” to “little brother” Mike, and an long list of beloved extended family.
Henry was raised in Geauga County in the Lake Lucerne neighborhood and graduated from Kenston High School in 1976. He graduated from Miami University in 1980 with a degree in Finance.

Henry served in the Peace Corps from 1980 to 1982 and met his future wife, Linda Blommer, while working with village cooperatives in Lesotho in Southern Africa. (The couple later returned to visit the villages for their 25th wedding anniversary.)

After marrying in Idaho in 1982, Henry attended Cleveland State’s John Marshall School of Law and practiced law for a short time with his father, Gene Henry.
In 1988, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate where he served a full term, followed by a brief term in the Public Defender’s Office.
In 1993, Governor George Voinovich selected Chip as Geauga County’s new Juvenile/Probate Court Judge to succeed the late Judge Frank G. Lavrich. He was re-elected numerous times and served in that role until his death.
During his time in the Court, he worked diligently to provide safe homes for abused and neglected children, bringing the CASA program for court appointed child advocacy to Geauga County, and utilizing creative juvenile sentencing that emphasized restitution and community service.

He was active with the Big Brother program, serving as a Big Brother himself, and a Returned Peace Corps volunteer. He loved his family, his close community of dear friends, all children, his staff who he felt were exceptional, as well as traveling, his dogs, his motorcycles, his camper, fishing and Alaska.
